Aussie Horse Tales
By Elyne Mitchell
Mitchell, Elyne The silver brumby
Sydney, 1958
One of the great iconic stories of Australian horse literature, the Silver Brumby is a tale of Thowra, a wild horse in the alpine bushland of Australia, and his struggles to take his place as the leader of the brumbies. Although written over 50 years ago this story of struggle and freedom is still relevant today, and it's enduring popularity have founded a strong legacy including a feature film and animated cartoon inspired by Mitchel's tale. Beautifully written, with a thrilling conclusion, this first book in Mitchell’s saga of the brumbies is not one that should be missed by any young horse lovers.

Lester, Alison The quicksand pony
Allen & Unwin, 2000
Biddy is excited to be included on the cattle mustering trip along the coast and she is sure she and her pony Bella will perform well. But on the way back Bella becomes bogged down in a sinkhole of quicksand and Biddy is forced to leave her as the tide comes in. However when she returns the nextday she finds no sign of her pony except for hoofmarks leading away. A story of frienship, love and secrets in the past, the Quicksand pony isn't as harrowing a read as Lester's Snow Pony, but it still gives you a thrill as both Biddy and Bella go on their journeys. Moderately paced, younger readers might find this book challenging, but it is well worth it for the older readers of this list.
